Hello and thankyou for checking out my portfolio!

My name is Shannon AKA Lyptil Designs. I am a 32-Year-old male born in Sydney, Australia, residing

in Yugambeh Country (Gold Coast). I am Currently in my third and final year at Griffith University

studying a Bachelor of Industrial Design.

I have previous work experience as an Automotive electrician, piling, and foundations for a civil

engineering company and completed a Diploma of Science prior to embarking on my Bachelor of

Industrial Design journey.

When I’m not studying, creating or working, I like to spend my time socialising, exercising,

collecting and playing records, and getting out into nature. I thoroughly enjoy bushwalking,

camping and reading a good book.

My ethos.

A creator, problem solver and an up-cycler who is passionate about sustainability, the preservation of the natural environment and designing accordingly.

Sustainability is a complex problem and can be approached in many ways such as -  Sustainable material choice, refining manufacturing processes and designing products to be repaired instead of thrown away.

One of my personal favourite methods is designing for attachment by ways of instilling meaning into the product. Whether it be a table, an item of clothing or even a coffee cup, I strongly believe that if the owner has a deeper appreciation for the object, then naturally he/she is far more likely to look after it or have it repaired if need be in order to keep it for a long time. If we can get a cultural shift in how we possess and consume things, I believe that we can make a massive downward shift in western societies' material consumption and waste.

It's my firm belief that by utilising advancing material and manufacturing technologies, we can create an innovative and sustainable future through industrial and product design.

What am I hoping to do next?

Post degree I am aiming to find a company that is like-minded in ethos with a design team that will take me on and bring me up to speed with the industry standards. I would ideally like to find a career mentor, to coach me through my graduate years and beyond. As for my industry direction, I am still unsure of this.

Industrial design is a very broad industry and so through my work and work placement, I am gaining experience across several different industries.

My current workplace is at Steel Post and Rail in Currumbin.  A family-owned steel manufacturing company that designs and build custom steel structures ranging from bus stops to grandstands.

I'm currently undergoing two work placements. The first one is held at Yellow Goat Designs, a high-end interior design firm that predominantly design bespoke interior lighting. The second is through Griffith University, working alongside an orthopedic surgeon from the Southport Private Hospital whereby we are designing surgical instruments.

So far I’m enjoying all aspects of my work experience. I am feeling drawn towards interior design/furniture making and a workplace that has a good balance of CAD design, hands-on creating and prototyping.
