FREQUENCY

Frequency started its life as a 102-piece puzzle that is carefully assembled to take the form of a coffee table like no other. Inspired by Soundwaves, Vibrations that ride on the air that surrounds us, this piece takes different forms and shapes from every angle you look at it. Slicing through the center of the piece is 6mm clear glass, depicting the air a soundwave ride’s on. The coffee table is a well-balanced display of artistic expression that pushed the boundaries of CAD-designed furniture that utilised cutting-edge manufacturing and still achieved everyday practicality.

Design brief

To design and manufacture a small to medium coffee table that makes a statement and pushes the boundaries of Parametric modelling, CNC machining and furniture design. The design must have considered sustainable material choices and fundamentally portray individualism and design identity.  Materials budget - $250

Reflection

This project had been on my mind for well over a year before it happened. With previous experience making furniture as a hobby I knew I would this design brief. What actually followed, was a bit of a shock. I struggled massively to define a direction and it took weeks for me to figure out a refined brief. Even when I had refined my brief I had too many ideas pulling me in different directions. With great feedback and further refinement, I managed to settle on an early version of Frequency. From this point, I thoroughly enjoyed the design process, problem-solving and experimenting with form and materials until I finally felt like it all fell into place.

I couldn't be more happy and proud of the end result.
